Removable hurricane shutters are a popular option for homeowners looking to protect their properties from storm damage. There are two main types: aluminum panels and clear panels, each with its own benefits.
Aluminum Panels
Benefits of Aluminum Hurricane Shutters and Storm Panels
1. Durability : Aluminum hurricane shutters and storm panels are built to withstand high winds and flying debris. Typically crafted from thicker materials (around .050), these impact-rated panels offer superior storm protection for your home.
2. Cost-Effective : Compared to impact-resistant windows, aluminum hurricane shutters and storm panels are a more affordable storm protection solution. They deliver reliable performance at a lower cost.
3. Easy Installation : Installing aluminum storm panels is straightforward. They usually require powder-coated tracks or mounting hardware, which can be easily removed after the storm. This makes them a practical choice for homeowners seeking efficient, removable protection.
4. No Ladders for 2nd Stories : Installing hurricane panels on second-story windows is simple and can be done without ladders. Watch our training video for step-by-step instructions on how to install panels on upper floors. This means anyone, regardless of age or physical ability, can handle installation without needing assistance.
5. Compact Storage : When not in use, aluminum hurricane shutters and panels take up minimal storage space. Their corrugated design allows them to stack tightly together, often stored conveniently in the corner of the garage or along the sides of a garage door.
Clear Panels
1. Visibility: Clear hurricane panels are made from polycarbonate. They allow light to enter and provide visibility, making them a great aesthetic choice.
2. Ease of Installation: They are often lighter than aluminum panels, making them easier to handle and install. Many clear panels come with simple mounting options.
3. 2nd stories: No ladders are need for installing on second story windows. They install outside while you are inside the house. See our video in training section on 2nd story install.
4. Protection: While they offer good hurricane protection against debris and wind, they may not be as strong as thicker aluminum options. However, they are still have the same impact rating as all of our hurricane protection products have.
5. Storage: Clear panels tend to take up a little more space to store, compared to Aluminum Panels. The hurricane panels are stored on either side of garage door in the corner. They require no more the 2 shoe boxes of floor space for the entire house including all doors and windows..
6. Cost: They can be more expensive than aluminum panels, but the aesthetic benefits may justify the cost for some homeowners.
Choosing the Right Option
When deciding between aluminum and clear panels, consider factors like your budget, the importance of visibility during a storm, installation ease, and how much space you have for storage. Both options provide essential protection, so it often comes down to personal preference and specific needs. Remember that for your house to be protected all windows and doors need protection.
